Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Scholarship Fund - 2020


At the recently concluded interview by Ibrahim Hamid (Chairman, Education Committee), Anverally Akberally (Vice President) and Mr Farook (Secretary), 31 deserving students were selected on the recommendation of Mrs. Shriyani Perera, Sectional Head of A Level, for the award of scholarships.


The poor, needy and deserving children were selected for this programme and we hope that our members and other well wishers come forward by making their generous contributions and support to help these deserving  students, to achieve good results at their A Level examinations






It is with much sorrow that we wish to announce the passing away of two of our active members - Sam Tegel and Imran Bin Ahamed, in November 2019 and January 2020 respectively.  May they attain Jinnathul Firdhouse.






AGM 2019/2020


The AGM for 2019/2020 was held on 1st December 2019 at the Swimming Pool Complex of the College.  It was chaired by Mr. Ibrahim Hamid and attended by 40 members.  Mr. Salahudeen Cader was elected Presidnet for the second year and the full list of Ex Co members are given in another page.





Ibrahim Hamid takes off to New Delhi



Hamid will be leaving to New Delhi for the ISSF World Cup as the 'Rifle / Pistol Jury' on the 19th Feb  and return on the 28th instant. It is worthy of note that it will go on record that Hamid is the first ISSF Judge in Sri Lanka
to officiate at a World Cup as a  " Jury for Rifle and Pistol". 

We wish him well.

Inter House Shooting Championship 2018

The Inter House Shooting Championship will take place at College premises on Sunday 27th January 2019.  Over 50 students were trained from which lot the best 8 students were selected to represent each House.  The Awards Ceremony will take place at 3.30 and Mr. Trizviiy Marikkar, Principal, will be the Chief Guest.  Mr. Salahudeen Cader, President of G60, will be the Guest of Honour.

At the first Ex Co meeting held on 5th December 2018, the following members were appointed as Chairmen of Sub Committees:

 Asfak to International Shooting Championship

 Asfak Ahmad, presently the Captain of the College Shooting Team, has obtained the necessary qualification with 520 out of 600, 10 points more than MQS (Minimum Qualifying Standard) and is in the Sri Lanka Schools’ National Pool.  On the recommendation of the Project Chairman, Ibrahim Hamid, the Group of Sixties is partly sponsoring Asfak’s participation at forthcoming H & N Cup Shooting Championship in Munich, Germany from 23rd to 27th January 2019.  We wish him all the best.   images\20190116_162929.jpg



           14th Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday, 4th November 2018 at the Swimming Pool Complex.  Mr. Salahudeen Cader was unanimously elected as the President.  In his address he stressed the importance of more activities and fellowship to keep the Group alive and contribute to the progress of Zahira. He encouraged the present members to bring in more members to join the Group.

A large gathering of nearly 50 members participated and the event ended with lunch hosted by Anver Akberally.

               5th Navy Open Shooting Championship 2018

At the above Championship held on 13th October 2018, Muneer Ahmed secured 3rd place in the 10m Air Pistol Novices.  We wish him well for greater success in the future.

Junior Air Pistol shooter Asfak Ahmad scored 520 points out of 600. He was placed 4th among the Junior Shooters and this performance is his personal best. Youth Air Rifle shooter Ahmed Sulaiman improved in his second big Competition by scoring 482 points out of 600.

All this is the result of the untiring efforts of Ibrahim Hamid (SSP Rtd, ISSF Grade A Judges License) who is an active member of the Group of Sixties.  We should give him all support by providing him all facilities and equipment to achieve even greater results. 

Following on the success of our boys in recent events, Aga Barrie one of our best Shooters in yesteryear, with his close old boys in Canada (Faizal Ackiel and the rest), came forward and gave a donation, to purchase Air rifles.  Aga has been in the forefront and has contributed immensely with motivation and support to our Zahirian Shooters.  On behalf of the College and our Group of Sixties, Ibrahim Hamid sends his thanks and blessings to the donors




                         Shooting Sport at Zahira after a span of over 50 years is gaining popularity

 Thanks to the untiring efforts of Ibrahim Hamid and backed by the Group of Sixties, shooting as a sport is gaining popularity judging by the enthusiasm shown by our present Zahirians. 

 The Inter House Air Rifle Shooting Competition was held on 30th September 2017 for the second year in succession.  The events were open to all three age groups, namely, under 19, under 16 and under 14..

Cordova House carried away the Champion House Challenge Trophy.  Ahmad Aasik of Angora House was outstanding and was adjudged the  "SHARP SHOOTER”'of the Tournament for 2017.  Ahmed Sulaiman of Cordova House did well to receive the Under 16  “ SHARP SHOOTER” Trophy.  Azaaq Hassan of Cordova House showed great potential in the Under 14 and received the "SHARP SHOOTER ' Trophy.

 Mr Trizviiy Marikkar, Principal, distributed the Champion House and the Sharp Shooter Trophies and Certificates, to the Winners and addresed the athletes.  He was happy to note that a large number of students had taken a keen  interest in Rifle Shooting and promised to find a suitable location in the College premises for a permanent,10 M Air Rifle/Pistol Range.

 Mr M.S. Mazeer, Chairman Sports Council and the President of the Group of Sixties awarded the Certificates of participation to the Under 16 Athletes. Group Sixties is the main Sponsor of the College Shooting and assisted College for purchase of Air Rifles/Air Pistols and other shooting items like pellets etc.

 Mr Ifthikar Ahamed, Past President of the Goup of Sixties distributed the Certificates of participation to the Under 14 Athletes. Mr Iftikar Ahamed goes on record as the President of the Group to have contributed to the purchase of 3 Air Rifles to commence this great sport after a span of over 50 Years, when ZAHIRA created some of the best shooters in the Country.




Zahira Inter House Air Rifle Shooting Tournament will take place on Saturday, 30th September 2017 at Zahira College in the afternoon.  Around 40 students from the 4 houses will take part.   Mr Saleem Safraz an old boy of Zahira, a qualified Judge of the  International Shooting Sports Federation and Secretary, Judges Committee  of the National shooting Sport Federation will be the Chief Range Officer at the meet. The Award ceremony will be at 4 pm.

This is yet another event organized by the Zahira G60 under leadership of Ibrahim Hamid.


125th year ZAHIRA  WALK.

 Zahira walk organised by the O.B.A. will be held on 29th July 2017 at 7.30 am.

Members who wish to participate shall buy a Walk Ticket priced at.Rs.1950/=

which includes a T. Shirt, a Cap, a Water bottle.

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Illaihi Rajiuun!

Al Haj Mohamed Samsudeen Macan Markar, the founder President of Zahira College Group of Sixties passed away on 26th July 2013 after a brief illness. Janaza leaves residence at Galle Face Court 2, Colombo 3 at 10 am on Saturday 27th July 2013.

Dear Member,

The Zahira Group of Sixties has organized an excursion  for members and their families for a day out at LANGS LAND ESTATE, NEBODA, MATHUGAMA.

The location has been selected for its natural scenic beauty and countryside atmosphere. The Estate Bungalow provides ample space for relaxation and is also equipped with a Swimming Pool for kids and adults, for fun and frolic.

We want to make this an occasion for members and their families to unwind themselves and Interact in friendly banter with other members, while swapping stories of old times within the portals of Zahira, where many of us have cherished memories.

The travel time from Colombo is approx. 2 hours and arrangements have been made for transport from Colombo by bus.

The charges are as follows :    

           Rs.500/- per head (includes Lunch, Tea and Transport)

           Children under 7yrs.- 300/- per head

Vidyartha dazzle at Zahira Rugby Sevens

Last year's Cup runners-up, Vidyartha College Kandy, came up with a superb performance to beat Nalanda College Colombo, by 36 points (3 goals 3 tries) to 19 (2 goals 1 try) in the Rugby Sevens Final played at Zahira College Grounds, Maradana on March 3rd.

The try scorerers for Vidyartha were Hashan Bandara (2) tries, M. Thalwatta, Isuru Lakmal, S. Salinda and Dilshan, who scored a try each, while for Nalanda the tries were planned by T. Samindu, G. Karunathilaka and Devandi Maduraperuma. More than 100 participants from nine leading schools in the Island , plus Kuching combined Schools took part in the tournament which was organized for the sixth consecutive year by the Zahira College, Group of 60s headed by M.S. Mazeer (Chairman, organizing Committee) assisted by M.N.L. Lantra G-60 President, Tony Amith, Tournament Director, T.M.I. Hamid, Technical Director and Muhuseen Ariff, Tournament Coordinator

It was co-sponsored by Allied Trading International (Pvt) Ltd, Faiz Brothers (Pvt) Ltd., and P.M. Mohamed Ali & Co.

The Chief Guest at the final was Rizly Ilyas  (President WPRFU and Secretary, SLRFU). Addressing the gathering he said that he was really pleased to note the disciplined approach of the players. "It was an example to other schools" he added..

The Plate was won by Kuching Combined Schools, Malaysia who beat Carey College Colombo, 32-0, while the Bowl was won by Lalirth Athulathmudalali College, Mt. Lavinia, who beat Zahira College, Colomo 12-7.

The Most Outstanding Player's trophy was won by Christopher Joshu of Kuching Combine Schools, Malaysia, for his ourtstanding performances.

Gamini Indrasena refereed the final.
